Habitat for Humanity

The Florence County Master Gardeners and First Presbyterian Church teamed up Saturday, September 8 to do some landscaping at a Habitat for Humanity house at 407 Sanborn Street. Since the house was devoid of any landscaping, the Master Gardeners performed basic hardscaping around the house by first tilling  compost into the new flower beds then planting azaleas, other types of shrubs and a mixture of perennials and annuals. A layer of fresh mulch put the finishing touches on a project enjoyed by all. A spot was left for a tree to be planted during the dedication.

Although all of the Master Gardeners worked hard and enjoyed themselves, special thanks need to be given to Kelly Jokisch for serving as project lead and Bill Pickel for obtaining the needed supplies.

Moore Intermediate School "Diggin' Deeper" Outdoor Lab

Florence Master Gardeners assisted with the Moore Intermediate School "Diggin' Deeper" outdoor Lab - an Education Improvement Act (EIA) Teacher Award awarded to Moore's Art Teacher, Sharri Duncan to improve creative and innovative projects to be used in the classroom.
First phase was completed on August 1:  Turning over existing flower beds in school courtyard, adding/mixing in sand and compost, lay bedding fabric, outline the beds with decorative pavers and mulching.   The second phase was completed on August 2nd: Planting foundation plants and laying out pine straw.
All of the products were purchased/donated through the grant  and the Master Gardeners volunteered with the preparation and planting.
